Your guide to understanding the implications of the 2024 US elections for Washington and the world.
The US is reevaluating its military assistance to Ukraine as Donald Trump seeks to pressure Volodymyr Zelenskyy to make concessions, coming just days after both leaders publicly called for peaceful dialogue with Russia.
Trump’s move marks a significant shift, halting what had been a steady stream of US military aid, including weapons to Kyiv, since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine three years ago.
This development comes amid escalating tensions between Trump and Zelenskyy, as the US President pushes for Ukraine to expedite a resolution to the conflict with Russia.
“The President has made it clear that his focus is on achieving peace. We need our partners to commit to this objective. As we reassess our support, we aim to ensure that it aligns with this goal,” a White House official stated on Monday.
Trump’s decision follows renewed criticism of Ukraine’s President on social media and remarks during a press briefing on Monday afternoon. This comes after a tense confrontation in the Oval Office on Friday.
“I believe they should show more gratitude. This country has stood by them through thick and thin,” Trump said, referring to Zelenskyy. The US President also suggested that Ukraine’s leader might not remain in office long if he fails to reach an agreement with Moscow.
“It shouldn’t be such a difficult agreement,” Trump added. “It could happen very quickly. If someone is unwilling to agree, I don’t think they’ll be around for too long.”
