Police Tamil Nadu reached the rate of conviction of 95% in cases of ban in the northern districts in July 2024.
After Hooch tragedy claimed more than 90 lives in the districts of Kallakurichi, Villuppuram and Chengalpet, special teams were created that accelerated the court in waiting cases in multiple strategies that limited the brewery, transport and selling false spirits in 10 northern districts. The accused people in many of these cases – mostly belonging to the districts of Tiruvannamai, Cuddalore and Villuppuram – were found guilty and punished.
In the last year, 14,900 cases were registered in these districts against hundreds of suspects, especially in the hills of Kalvarayan and Javvadh. “We took steps to detain 123 usual perpetrators under the Bootlegger Act. The production and sale of false alcohol was almost eradicated in the zone due to the tireless efforts of the police, which gathered intelligence and acted quickly,” said police general inspector, ASRA Garg.
Financial investigation
In addition to missing suspects to prison, the police continued to investigate their resources of raw materials and transport networks. Wherever neighboring countries were involved, the help of the local police needed to detain the supplier. “We also froze the bank accounts of all perpetrators of the ban and reduced our impossible assets under control. Real estate that were purchased with a crime proceeds would be attached,” said Asra Garg.
According to the newly established provisions of section 52AA of the 1937 Tamil Nadu Act, 3,821 were suspected, who were usually involved in the crime of the ban, to carry out a bond with a guarantee for good behavior. Those who violated the bond conditions were arrested.
Rehabilitation schemes
Mr. Asra Garg said that schemes providing alternative employment by a reformed ban on perpetrators were carried out throughout the zone in conjunction with other departments. In addition to providing loans to start small enterprises, the authorities provided them with milch animals and carried out subsidy systems aimed at employment focused on employment.
