House democratic leader Hake Jeffries gave the longest speech in the history of the Chamber on Thursday (July 3) when he condemned the tax and expenditure of President Donald Trump.
The bill, which adds more than $ 3 trillion to state debt, secured the final passage despite the unified democratic opposition.
8 hours, 46 minutes of protest
Jeffries, 54, began to speak at 4:53 in the morning and closed at 13:38, broke the previous record of the house for 8 hours and 32 minutes determined by Kevin McCarthy in 2021. The extended remarks allowed by the leader of the leader known as the “magic minute”.
“It’s a crime scene and the House Democrats don’t want it,” Jeffries said. “This disgusting abomination is not about improving the quality of life of the American people. The focus of this law … justification of all the cuts that will hurt everyday Americans is to provide massive tax relief for billionaires.”
“All-out attack”
Legislation, called Trump as a “big beautiful account”, would reduce social expenditures and expand the reduction of taxes that Republicans claim to encourage growth. Jeffries, however, described this as “a complete attack on the values of the nation, hardworking Americans, trade unions and families of immigrants who follow the law”.
“The shame of this institution, if this law passes,” he said.
Slams hypocrisy
When his speech stretched at eight o’clock, Jeffries referred to Matthew 25 from the New Testament that he read aloud to emphasize what he called moral hypocrisy, Bill supporters: “For I was hungry and gave me something to eat.
Then he turned to criticize Trump’s commercial sale of the Bible and noted sharply: “I don’t know what I’m talking about, but if you sell the Bible, you should know the Bible.”
He added: “They got some people in this city, go to church and pray on Sunday – pray – and then come to congress and prey – prey – the American people. I’m not with such a kind of faith.”
Democrat’s attitude “hell not”
During his notes Jeffries stressed that a democratic detection was united in opposition: “We were” hell no! “Last week,” hell no! ” This week, “Hell No!” Yesterday “hell no!” Today, and we will continue to “hell!” About this effort to hurt the US people. ”
Voting Election Preview
Jeffries framed the legislation as a political responsibility for Republicans who head for medium Wednesdays: 2026:
“Voters get into the congress elections from November 2026 because these cuts will release the US people.”
He warned that if the Democrats were controlled, they were trying to reverse the cuts and “end this era of chaos, cruelty and corruption”.
Bill’s impact on social programs
Legislation would significantly reduce Medicaid and other safety network programs and potentially leave nearly 12 million Americans without health insurance. Rural hospitals warned that cuts could endanger their survival, which caused Republicans to include $ 50 billion in supplementary help.
Yet Jeffries insisted: “In one great ugly law of Donald Trump, life is not more affordable for everyday Americans more meaningful.”
In the final minutes of his record speech Jeffries, he summarized the position of Democrats in two words: “Hell not.”
