A seventy-three-year-old man was sentenced to a total of 13 years of simple imprisonment in two cases for sexually abusing two ten-year-old girls. He was also fined ₹1.5 million.
The defendant, who is bedridden, was brought to court by ambulance after a medical examination. Special Fast Track Court (POCSO) Thiruvananthapuram Judge Anju Meera Birla sentenced the accused to ten years’ simple imprisonment and payment of ₹10 lakh as fine in one case and three years’ imprisonment and payment of ₹50,000 as fine in the other.
Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional one-and-a-half year imprisonment, the court said.
Special public prosecutor RS Vijay Mohan appeared before the prosecution.
The incidents related to the case took place in 2021-22. The case against the accused is that he molested the girls who came to his shop to shop. When their families came to know about it, the father of one of the children and the uncle of the other child beat up the accused.
He filed criminal charges against both men. The defense argued that the sexual abuse allegations were fabricated against him to counter his complaint.
But the court did not recognize this argument. The child’s father told the court that he beat the defendant for harassing his daughter.
