
Local authorities along the Vembanad and Ashtamudi lakes were deposited between March 2023 and May 2025 sanctions in the total amount of 69 ₹ Lakh for illegal release of untreated wastewater into environmentally important places Ramsar.
Waste water was released from domestic boats, residential and commercial units and institutions. More than 2,000 illegal stores were sealed and more than 500 institutions were found without a wastewater treatment plant.
Seventy such ering units were closed for violations of environmental standards, according to the accepted report given by the main secretary of Keral in front of the Green Tribunal National Court’s main bench on July 15, 2025 in the case of related watercourses.
Between March 2023 and May 2025, a total of 12 199 inspection was carried out to check the violation. Of the fines of 69.23 Lakh, only 12.24 Lakh has been collected. It was found that a total of 556 units lacked wastewater treatment plants and nearly 194 plants were found to be broken.
The report stated that in the last two years 878 before the monsoon cleaning drives. More than 900 public areas were cleaned and about 385 tonnes of waste were removed. During this period, about 1,281 km of channels and drains were cleaned.
As part of the remedial measures against pollution, a three -stage monitoring system including local vigilation units and a commando for enforcing districts and blocks were created. Nine main projects at the community level were introduced in the districts that lakes have undergone, aimed at preventing illegal release.
Emphasis was placed on the treatment of fecal sludge and septum, into the operation of the wastewater treatment plant and on the support of the necessary infrastructure. According to the report, local authorities launched steps to set biologically contradictory, gray water treatment systems and soak pits to reduce illegal influx of waste water from domestic boats, residential and commercial equipment and institutions.
