611 booked for drunk driving in Hyderabad and Cyberabad

The Hyderabad traffic police booked 415 motorists during the two-day special drive against drunk driving held on Friday and Saturday, February 13 and February 14. The goal of the inspection was to improve road safety, according to a press release issued on February 15.

Of the 415 offenders, 341 were two-wheeler drivers, 27 three-wheeler drivers and 47 four-wheeler drivers. Officials said there will be zero tolerance for drunk driving and that such drives will continue.

Meanwhile, the Cyberabad traffic police conducted a weekend special drive and nabbed 196 offenders. Among them were 140 two-wheeler riders, 13 three-wheeler drivers, 41 four-wheeler drivers and two were driving heavy vehicles.

Police said that motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol and cause fatal accidents will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, 2023, which deals with manslaughter not amounting to murder and carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail along with a fine.

During the week from February 9 to February 14, a total of 212 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol were dealt with in Cyberabad courts. Of these, six persons were sentenced together with social service, and 206 were fined.
