In what could mark their first move following a potential promotion to the Premier League, Leeds United and the 49ers are reportedly eyeing a loan deal for a specific reinforcement.
Leeds and 49ers Targeting Loan Move
As the Championship season heads into its final two months, the race for automatic promotion remains fiercely contested, with Leeds United, Burnley, and Sheffield United all in the mix.
Currently, Leeds United are under the most pressure after a 2-2 draw against Queens Park Rangers allowed Sheffield United to level on points at the top of the table, while Burnley closed the gap to just two points. With eight games remaining, manager Daniel Farke will be determined to secure promotion for his side.

Leeds United have made a mistake in selling a player who could have replaced Junior Firpo.
Failing to secure promotion for the second time under Farke could lead to another exodus of talent, similar to last summer. However, achieving promotion could set the stage for a memorable summer if Leeds make the right moves both on and off the pitch.
In recent weeks, several potential targets have been linked with the club, but one name stands out. According to Graeme Bailey via Leeds United News, the 49ers and Leeds are planning a loan move for Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City this summer. This would mark Phillips’ third loan spell away from the Etihad.
Since joining Manchester City in 2022, Phillips has struggled to find his footing and appears increasingly in need of a fresh start. A return to Elland Road, where he previously excelled, could provide the midfielder with the opportunity to rediscover his best form.
After a mixed loan spell at Ipswich Town, a reunion with Leeds might be the solution Phillips needs to reignite his career.
“Fantastic” Phillips Needs Leeds Return
Among the potential moves this summer, Phillips’ return to Leeds would be one of the most logical, especially if the club secures promotion. The midfielder is in desperate need of a comeback, perhaps more than Leeds need him, and his Premier League experience could be invaluable for Farke’s side.
Despite a challenging season, Phillips has shown glimpses of his quality at Ipswich Town, earning praise from manager Kieran McKenna. Speaking earlier in the season, McKenna said: “As I said when he arrived, he’s followed a very similar pathway to a lot of our players. He’s climbed a mountain, he’s done terrific in his career. He went from being a player who played in the Championship for four, five, six seasons, whatever he did, to being part of a newly-promoted team that went to the Premier League, attacked the Premier League, and did fantastic in that division.”
With Phillips reportedly earning £8 million a year, Leeds would need to negotiate favorable terms with Manchester City to facilitate the move. However, it’s a deal the club should prioritize this summer.
