
A total of 488 motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol during special enforcement drives conducted by the traffic police in Hyderabad and Cyberabad over the weekend.
Hyderabad traffic police nabbed 351 drivers for drunken driving during a two-day special drive conducted on May 8 and 9.
Of those ordered, 292 rode on two-wheelers, 30 on three-wheelers and 29 on four-wheelers and other vehicles.
According to police, 69 offenders recorded a blood alcohol level (BAC) between 30 and 50 mg, 146 between 51 and 100 mg, 65 between 101 and 150 mg, 44 between 151 and 200 mg, 15 between 201 and 250 mg and seven above 300051 mg.
Meanwhile, the Cyberabad traffic police booked 137 motorists during the weekend special drive.
Among them were 113 two-wheeler riders, five three-wheeler drivers, 18 four-wheeler drivers and one was driving a heavy vehicle.
Police said 105 offenders recorded BAC levels between 36mg and 200mg per 100ml, 18 recorded levels between 201mg and 300mg and 14 recorded levels between 301mg and 550mg.
All perpetrators will be brought to justice.
The Cyberabad police have warned that motorists found to be driving under the influence and causing fatal accidents will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to manslaughter not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment along with fine.
Police also said 198 drink-driving cases were dealt with by Cyberabad courts during the past week, with four offenders fined and jailed, four fined with community service and 190 released with fines.
The traffic police said there will be zero tolerance for drink driving violations and special drives will continue through Hyderabad and Cyberabad.
Motorists have been urged to co-operate with enforcement teams and avoid drink-driving.
