Your guide to understanding the implications of the 2024 US elections for Washington and the world
Donald Trump announced that starting Tuesday, he would enforce a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico, emphasizing there is no room for last-minute negotiations.
“The tariffs are all set up and ready to go,” Trump stated during a press briefing in the Oval Office on Monday afternoon. “They will take effect tomorrow.”
Last month, Trump signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico, with the exception of Canadian oil and energy products, which will face a 10% fee.
Canada is the largest foreign supplier of oil to the United States, accounting for approximately 60% of U.S. crude oil imports.
Following frenzied diplomatic efforts between Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the implementation of these tariffs was initially postponed until March 4.
On Monday, Trump claimed these tariffs would be “very beneficial for car companies.”
This is a developing story.
