45 acres earmarked for INCOIS Regional Center at Kakinada
The Andhra Pradesh government has earmarked 45 acres of land along the Kakinada coast for setting up a regional branch of the Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).
The Andhra Pradesh Maritime Council signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with INCOIS under the Ministry of Earth Sciences at the regional conference of the 31st CII Partnership Summit held in Kakinada on 12 October.
Commerce, Trade and Food Processing Minister TG Bharat has announced that the proposed INCOIS Regional Center at Kakinada will be set up at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore and will serve nearly seven lakh people along the Andhra Pradesh coast.
According to an official statement issued by District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad, the land sought by INCOIS has been identified along the Kakinada coast. Rajya Sabha MP Sana Satish Kumar requested the Ministry of Earth Sciences for a regional center in July and it was approved in September. Currently, the nearest INCOIS center is in Hyderabad.
INCOIS provides information on potential fishing zones, availability of fish species in the respective zones, especially tuna, ocean state forecasts, tsunami early warning and marine advisory services, in addition to focused research on the Bay of Bengal.
