The Cyberabad traffic police booked 377 cases of drunk driving during the weekend special enforcement drive held between December 26 and 27 as part of intensified checks across the authority to curb drunk driving.
Miyapur topped the list with 48 cases, followed by Shadnagar with 42 cases and Shamshabad and Chevella with 35 cases each. Jeedimetla with 13 cases was among the areas with the lowest cases followed by KPHB and RC Puram with 15 cases each. Kukatpally has recorded zero cases.
According to the police, most of the perpetrators rode on two-wheelers, 300 cases, followed by 58 cases on four-wheelers. Seventeen cases were registered against three-wheelers, while two drivers of heavy vehicles were also driving under the influence.
Based on blood alcohol concentrations, police said 317 offenders recorded BAC readings between 35mg/100ml and 200mg/100ml. A further 39 offenders were found to have BAC levels ranging from 201mg/100ml to 300mg/100ml, while 21 motorists recorded dangerously high levels between 301mg/100ml and 550mg/100ml. All the accused will be brought before the court.
Officials said anyone found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a fatal accident will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with manslaughter not amounting to murder and carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail along with a fine.
Meanwhile, during the previous week from December 22 to 27, the courts dealt with 55 drink-driving cases. Of these, one person was sentenced to both a fine and imprisonment, five were fined and served community service, while 49 were fined only, according to the Cyberabad traffic police.
