36 members of Ganesh Utsav Samithi detained after protest at Tank Bund

Tension prevailed at Tank Bund on Monday (September 21) after members of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi (BGUS) protested against restrictions on immersion of Ganesha idols and allegedly tried to remove iron barricades erected along the lake shore.

The police took 36 members of the Samith into preventive custody after the protest. According to an officer from the Domalgud police, they were detained for about three hours and taken to the Gandhi Nagar police station.

Around 11 am, a large group of BGUS members reached Tank Bund and protested against the iron barricades installed along the railings by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the city police.

Large banners were also put up stating that immersion of idols is prohibited along the upper stretch of Tank Bund in accordance with Supreme Court orders.

The protesters were reportedly trying to unscrew and remove the barricades while raising anti-GHMC slogans, prompting the police personnel deployed at the spot to intervene.

A Domalgud police officer said the protesters resisted when the personnel tried to take them into preventive custody, leading to some ruckus at the spot. Police said the members were aware of the orders restricting immersion along the Tank Bund stretch.

The Domalgud police subsequently registered a case under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the officer said.
