The Central Water Commission (CWC) reported the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that 34 of the 100 glacial lakes that they studied in India have a “growing trend” in the water spread.
NGT focuses on the issue of melting glaciers, resulting in increasing the size of glacial lakes and the risk of their overflowing and rupture, with subsequent effects based on an article published in 2024, which was a study suggesting that the increase in lakes in Himacal Pradesh could be devised by their border.
The CWC report states that out of 100 glacial lakes in the size of 10 hectares, there was a growing trend in the water spreading area at 34, which is a declining trend in 20, “trend without change” in 44 and “no analysis” was made on two lakes.
NGT also ordered the Hydrology of the National Institute to file an affidavit on proposals and corrective measures, according to the NGT order of 14 July. The order was issued by the main bench of NGT, which included President Prakash Shrivastava, Judicial member of Sudhir Agarwal, agency, and A. Senhial Vele.
