All measures are introduced to initiate the “Stree Shakti” scheme in the Kurnool district since August 15 (Friday).
A total of 270 Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) from a total of 390 buses in the district was assigned to a free driving system for women and transgenders. Women and transgenders can travel free of charge throughout the state by creating their evidence of identity in the Velug, Ultra Pallen Veluga, City City and Express Buses.
According to officials, 186 Buses of Palle Veluga, two Ultra Pallen Veluga and 82 Express Buses were assigned to this system. Officials added that free ride will not apply to buses operating to Srisailam. This represents 70 % of the buses fleet in the district set aside for this program, the officials said. The scheme will be started by the Minister of Industrial and Business Ministers TG Bharath in the district.
It is estimated that nearly 2 women will benefit from this program daily, and the corporation has prepared alternative buses to satisfy demand. These substitute or unused buses were redesigned for use, the officials said.
