The district will soon have a stronger community-based disaster response system where about 250 youth volunteers will be ready to undergo intensive training in the basics of disaster management to handle emergency situations, including natural disasters and accidents. The initiative is expected to significantly strengthen the operations of the Community Rescue Squads while creating a network of master trainers to lead preparedness efforts in their respective villages.
The training programme, which was launched by Deputy Collector (Disaster Management) S. Sajid at the Kozhikode Youth Hostel on Monday (April 20, 2026), is being organized under the Yuva Aapda Mitra project jointly implemented by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS). The first batch, made up of NYKS volunteers, will undergo training by April 26.
According to District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) officials, the camp was designed as a seven-day non-residential program for the convenience of participants and trainers. Sessions will be led by subject matter experts, including the District Risk Analyst and Disaster Management Plan Coordinator (Local Government Department).
