Councilor Dhanesh Mohan grabbed the mayor’s microphone and said that opposition members had been denied a chance to speak. The mayor hastily packed the session and erased 74 agenda items within minutes. LDF workers gathered in front of the hall and the police blocked their attempts to attack the premises.
“Funds are not allocated”
The protests later spilled into the streets with the CPI councilors (M) N. Sukanya, T. Ravendran, secretary of the KP Sudhan Party and other leaders who lead the march. Mrs. Sukanya criticized the “inactivity” of the civic body and stated that the means were not assigned to control the population of stray dogs. “It’s a way to protect lives on our roads,” she asked.
The mayor later announced that a special council meeting would be convened on Thursday to deal with crisis. At a press conference, he claimed that opposition members politicized this problem with regard to the upcoming local elections. He said that in the last two days six dogs have been caught and in the coming days another will be captured.
Waste
The mayor also accused illegal dumping of garbage in the canton area for the growing population of stray dogs. He added that the legal steps of animal rights prevent the efforts for aggressive stray dogs.
Deputy Mayor P. Indira, former mayor of Mohanan, and ruling councilors participated in the press briefing and repeated their obligation to solve the situation.
