Around 20,000 people, including students from Adikavi Nannaya University and its affiliated colleges and civil society representatives, sang the national song Vande Mataram at the university campus near Rajamahendravaram on Saturday. The event commemorated the song’s 150th anniversary and celebrated its cultural, historical and emotional significance.
Before the singing, Tourism and Culture Minister Kandula Durgesh, Vice-Chancellor S. Prasanna Sree and Rajamahendravaram Urban Development Authority Chairman B. Venkata Ramana Chowdary led a rally carrying a massive 25,000 square feet national flag across the grounds.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Durgesh said Vande Mataram, written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, would continue to inspire future generations. He also recalled Pingali Venkaiah’s contribution to the freedom struggle, especially his role in designing the national flag.
