The Department of Revenue has declared 2-Bromo-4-methylpropiophenone, the main precursor chemical used by criminals to illegally manufacture the synthetic drug mephedrone, as a “controlled” substance under the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances (Control of Controlled Substances) Regulations 2013.

“All persons and entities engaged in the manufacture, distribution, sale, purchase, possession, storage, consumption, import or export of 2-Bromo-4-methylpropiophenone or offering for sale or distribution or brokering its sale or purchase… are required to obtain a registration number in Form A from the Zonal Jurisdictional Director, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), in accordance with NDPS Order (201) on Monday. 15, 2026).

“All such firms/entities are requested to submit their applications for registration in Form B to the relevant zonal unit of the NCB well in advance, ie on or before August 7, 2026, so that the registration number is issued by the NCB within the statutory period of 180 days from March 11, 2026,” it said, adding that they must also provide details of stock held as on June 321 2026. 2026.

Any violation of the NDPS Act in this regard after September 7, 2026 would attract criminal proceedings, the NCB said.
