Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (May 11, 2026) greeted people on National Technology Day – which commemorates the landmark events of May 11, 1998, when India conducted successful nuclear tests in Rajasthan’s Pokhran – and said technology has become a key pillar in building an independent India.
Mr Modi said the landmark moment in 1998 reflected India’s scientific excellence and unwavering commitment.
“We salute you on National Technology Day. We remember with pride the hard work and determination of our scientists that led to the successful tests in Pokhran in 1998,” X said on the social network.
The Prime Minister said that technology has become a key pillar in building an independent India and is accelerating innovation, expanding opportunities and contributing to the country’s growth across sectors.
“Our continued focus remains on empowering talent, encouraging research and creating solutions that serve both national progress and the aspirations of our people,” he said.
Mt. Modi said on this day in 1998 that the nuclear tests conducted at Pokhran showcased India’s remarkable capability to the world.
“Our scientists are the real architects of national pride and self-respect,” he said.

India conducted five nuclear tests of advanced weapons designs on 11 and 13 May 1998 at the Pokhran firing range in the Rajasthan desert.
The first three detonations took place simultaneously at 15:45 hrs IST on 11 May.
