Residents in panic = Punkunnam after 18 python hatchlings were found in a house compound in two days, raising fears of more snakes in the area. The cubs were recovered from the premises of a house on Seetharam Lane.
The incident first came to light when the house owner’s brother Karthik spotted two baby snakes near the canal adjacent to the house. Later in the day, more cubs were found in the compound. Around eight were caught on the first day, with two slipping into the water.
A new search Thursday morning led to the capture of 10 more hatchlings, including some found inside a scooter parked outside a home. The hatchlings, each around 50 cm, were handed over to the forest managers.
According to the forest department’s preliminary assessment, the python might have come from a nearby canal, laid its eggs in or around the foundation of the house and the cubs might have emerged recently.
Fearing that more snakes might be hiding in the compound, the family in coordination with forest officials is preparing to breach parts of the compound wall for further inspection.
The discovery caused anxiety among the residents, especially as children and elderly members live in the house. Officials said the rescued cubs will be released into the forest.
