Are you planning to visit the United States? Be prepared for a long waiting for an appointment with an interview for Visa B1/B2, because the waiting time in some American consulates in India has been for more than a year. However, if you are in a hurry, the choice of the right city becomes crucial because some have much shorter waiting times.
The US Foreign Ministry 25th May 2025 updated the estimates of the waiting times of the global visa and shows both the average waiting time in each consulate and the estimated time until the next appointment.
Most visa applicants B-1 (business), B-2 (tourism) or B-1/B-2 (combined) must participate in a personal conversation if it is not eligible for remission. Waiting times differ according to the city, staff and demand.
The waiting time is calculated in the months in 30 days of increments and a half months in 15 -day increments. This includes weekends and holidays when the embassy is closed, according to the US Foreign Ministry. However, the average waiting time does not guarantee that the visa applicant will receive a meeting at a certain time.
Embassy and consulates also regularly release other slots for appointment. Applicants who want an earlier slot for appointment after the original planning of the interview should regularly check back and move their appointment to another available slot.
The US Department of Foreign Affairs has stated: “Now we provide more information about the average time that is not an immigration visa, waiting for an interview in the previous month. We continue to provide an estimated waiting time until the next appointment for visitors’ visas.”
What are the visas B1 and B2?
The B1 visa is designed for trade routes such as meetings, conferences or contractual interviews. Visa B2 is for tourism, family visit, medical care or social events – without paid work. Most people receive a combined B1/B2 visa that allows business and free time during your stay.
