Twelve final-year students of the Government Dental College (GDC), Hyderabad, have been suspended for six months pending a police investigation following allegations of torturing and harassing first-year BDS students staying at the Osmania Medical College hostel.

According to GDC Hyderabad director Sarjeev Singh Yadav, first-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students, who joined the institution a few months ago, were repeatedly harassed by senior students. The juniors, who are accommodated in the Osmania Medical College hostel along with MBBS and post-graduate medical students, submitted a written complaint on June 11 detailing the alleged incidents.

Dr. Singh said first-year students complained that seniors routinely order them to bring alcohol, cigarettes, food and collect Swiggy supplies, besides making them perform various tasks. They also allegedly threatened the juniors with consequences, including barring them from attending classes, if they refused to comply.

The problem escalated on the night of June 8 when interns and graduate students intervened and asked the final year students to stop harassing the juniors. This allegedly led to a scuffle, the seniors objected to the intervention and insisted that the matter concerned only them and the first-year students.

On the basis of a written complaint, the anti-tampering committee and the dormitory supervisor started an investigation. Parents of the students were also called to a meeting earlier this week and informed of the development.

“As per UGC regulations, we have suspended the 12 final year students for six months till the police investigation is done. Further action will be taken depending on the report we receive from the police,” said Dr. Singh and added that the institution follows a policy of zero tolerance towards dishonesty.
