Twelve children of migrating workers were hospitalized on Sunday after meals of tree seeds in the Chamarajanagar district in Yelandur Taluk from the Chamarajanagar district.
Children from Ballari, who stayed in the village of Yeriyur, believed that they consumed “Maryhaya”, seeds of trees that grow in nature.
Soon they began to vomit and fell ill. “The children of the different ages ate Marhekaya after one of them tasted several,” the clerk said.
They were treated at the Yelandur Taluk Hospital and later moved to the Chamarajanagar District Hospital. Children who were reportedly in Chamarajanagar, were now out of danger for the harvest of sugar cane, they added.
“Everyone is recovering,” said Chidambara, a district medical officer Chamarajanagar, adding that they will soon be released.
Resources at the Health Department recalled that a similar incident was reported from Kollegal Taluk in the Chamarajanagar district about a year ago, when about nine children ate the seeds of some wild trees and had to be hospitalized after complications.
