1,169 candidates decided to win unopposed in the Tripura village committee elections
A record number of candidates who contested the upcoming village committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council are poised to win unopposed due to lack of rival nominations.
The State Election Commission (SEC) said on Wednesday that polling will not be held for 1,169 seats, representing one-third of the 4,597 seats in 587 village committees, as only lone nominations were received. The SEC said a review of all 10,958 nominations filed was done during the day.
Most of the candidates who win unopposed belong to Tipra Motha. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Tipra Motha and the Tripura Tribal People’s Front had earlier announced that they would contest the elections together. However, the three parties have so far failed to arrive at a formula for sharing seats. The senior minister said the alliance was nothing but an agreement to keep the CPI(M) and the Congress at bay.
They are competing for the same places
Tipra Motha and BJP even fielded candidates for the same seats in several village committees. September 10 is the last date for the withdrawal of nominations.
The SEC has assured that the September 28 elections will be held in a peaceful manner. She added that the Ministry of Home Affairs has sanctioned 24 companies of central forces to be deployed in sensitive areas in the state.
