In separate incidents, two groups containing 11 fishermen from the Nagapattinam district suffered injuries after they were allegedly attacked in the middle of the sea by unidentified persons, suspected of coming from Sri Lanka, Sunday (October 5, 2025). The incidents occurred east of Kodiyakarai.
The Coast Security Sources (CSG) reported that a group of six Nambiyar Nagar fishermen in the Nagapattinam district laid a sail aboard a registered fibrous ship around 14:00 that they were hunted east of Kodiyakarai around 20:00 when eight people were suspected of Sri Lanka arrived and loaded on board on board.
The group reportedly attacked Nagapattinam fishermen with iron rods, wooden logs and knives, which caused them to injure, and allegedly robbed a silver chain, engine, mobile phone, GPS gadget, light batteries and walks from them, said CSG sources.
Six injured fishermen were identified as: S. Vignesh (28), S. Vimal (26), S. Sugumar (31), V. Thiruugan (31) V. Murugan (38) and P. Arn (27). On Monday (October 6) they returned to the coast and accepted the Government Medical College Hospital in Nagapattinam.
On the second incident, a group of five fishermen from Nambiyar Nagar on board the unregistered fiber ship. Fish east of Kodiyakarai, when a group of eight people who were suspected of Sri Lanka came to two ships. The group reportedly attacked fishermen and robbed the engine, GPS gadget, five mobile phones and a fishing net weighing around 500 kg.
The fishermen injured were identified as M. Sasikumar (30), S. UDaysankar (28), S. Sivasankar (25), M. Kriba (29) and R. Kamlesh (19). With the exception of the injured fisherman who was taken to Thanjavur for treatment, the remaining four undergo treatment in the Government Medical College Hospital in Nagapattinam, the sources said.
