
In Kerala, up to 11 institutions have become negative. These were assigned the status of Harith’s missions. Kannur Central Jail is the latest institution that has become part of this list. According to the mission, the prison became the first in the state that entered the list.
The extract is based on an audit of carbon emissions performed by missions. The institutions were part of the Clean Narline Carbon Keral Mission Harith Mission.
Ek Somasekharan, a district mission coordinator in Kannura, said the challenges faced by the prison were quantities.
“When we performed a carbon audit, we observed many challenges. Some problems included wastewater management, plastic waste and water management. With permanent efforts of employees and prisoners we could solve the gap and could enter the carbon negative state,” said Mr. Somasekharan.
Prison is waiting for an official statement to do so. “The development of the waste water treatment plant using local knowledge and the use of water treated for agriculture, establishment of material collection equipment, separation of waste and conversion of cow fertilizer into fertilizer, prison dealt with its emissions,” he added.
A prison official said he was one of the oldest prison in the state also a problem. “Maybe this is the first time that the old prison has become naughty negative. For newer structures, it is relatively easier to achieve carbon negativity because they can be built.
Institutions that have become carbon negative Jyothi Engineering College, Thrissur; Teak Museum, Nilambur; Poodaya Adivasi helped higher primary school, manicav, Wayanad; College of Engineering, Thalassery, Kannur; AC Kannan Nair Smaraka Govt Up School, Melangot, Caragod; Bishop Moore College, Mavelikaru; Nezru Arts and Science College, Kanhangad; Kannur Central Jail, GLPS MALAPPANCHERY, CARAGOD and Tashko Stone Crusher Unit, Karagod.
Navodaya School Atn’s manicava in Wayanad gained status at the beginning of this year. Interestingly, the school did not have to do any extra work to achieve this state.
“The school is performing a number of sustainable activities. It maintained good green coverage and managed its own waste. We chose nine institutions in the district for clean carbon campaign, and in the meantime the school was the only one that could reach this situation soon,” Suresh Babu, Navakeralam Karma Karma Karma Karma.
