In the last six years, Indians have lost more ₹52,976 crore on various cases of cyber fraud and cheating, fresh data compiled by India’s Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) and reported by Indian Express revealed.
The report reveals an increase in financial crimes including investment traps, digital arrests, online fraud, bank fraud and cyber phishing across the country. I4C is a division of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs that provides a framework and ecosystem for Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs)
The Indian Express report cites data from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal which shows that around ₹19,812.96 crore was lost in 2025 – last year – and 21,77,524 fraud complaints were received.
Outside ₹19,812 crore loss in 2025, about 77 per cent was lost in the name of investment schemes, 8 per cent was lost to digital arrest, 7 per cent to credit card fraud, 4 per cent to sexual extortion, 3 per cent to e-commerce fraud and 1 per cent to app/malware-based fraud, data cited in the report said.
In 2024 probably ₹22,849.49 crore was lost and 19,188 52 complaints were received. ₹7,463.2 million were lost and 13,103,61 complaints were received in 2023, the report said. Similar probably ₹2,290.23 crore was lost in 2022 and 69,44,46 complaints were received. ₹551.65 crore was lost in 2021 and 2,62,846 complaints were received in 2021. 8.56 lakh crore was lost in 2020 and 12,7746 complaints were received in 2020, according to the report citing unnamed officials.
Maharashtra leads the states
Among the states, Maharashtra recorded the highest monetary losses in 2025 in fraud-related offenses across the country. ₹3,203 crore loss and 28,33,20 complaints recorded. Maharashtra is closely followed by Karnataka at ₹2,413 crore loss and 21,32,28 complaints.
Tamil Nadu saw a loss ₹1,897 crore and 12,32,90 complaints, while Uttar Pradesh reported a loss ₹1,443 crore and 27,52,64 complaints last year, according to the report. Telangana saw ₹1,372 million lost and 95,000 complaints to fraud and fraud-related crimes, the report said.
These five states alone account for more than half of the total money lost to cyber fraud nationwide in 2025.
In 2025 alone, 77% of them ₹The loss of 19,812 million crowns was caused by fraudulent investment plans.
Among other states, ₹16.74 crore was lost while around 1,807 fraud complaints were received from Manipur in 2025.
The report also cites data from the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) which reveals that approximately 21 million cyber fraud complaints will be received in 2025. About 45 percent of those cases came from Southeast Asian countries — Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos, the report said.
