Housing Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan said he urged the Chief Minister to approve ₹260 crore for the adoption and development of 50 slums as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Karnataka Slum Development Board.
In a reply to Congress member K Govindaraj in the Legislative Council on Wednesday (March 18), the minister said the chief minister had assured that funds would be provided in the supplementary budget.
Mr. Ahmed said he has also approached companies like Wipro and Infosys to mobilize corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds for slum development.
He said that 3,325 slums have been identified across the state, of which 2,866 are officially notified. Currently, only ₹50 crore is earmarked for their development and provision of basic infrastructure, which he says is insufficient.
“In view of this, a proposal has been made to increase the allocation to at least ₹500 crore,” he said.
The minister added that in the last seven years, work has been started in 1,210 slums to provide 794 basic facilities at an estimated cost of ₹408.28 crore.
