As part of the state-wide campaign on uncollected bills, a district-level camp will be organized in Idukki on November 3 to facilitate settlement of such deposits. Organized by Central Bank of Idukki (State Bank of India) in collaboration with all banks operating in the district, the program will be held at Pappootty Hall near BMH Hospital in Thodupuzha.
A total of ₹ 51.37 crore unclaimed in various banks across Idukki district will soon come under a special initiative to return the funds to their rightful owners or heirs, according to Idukki District Chief Banking Manager Varghese M Mathew. “The event will focus on assisting the public in identifying and recovering unclaimed deposits, dormant accounts, unclaimed insurance proceeds and pension related charges through on-the-spot facilitation,” Mr Mathew said.
According to officials, many bank accounts become inactive when depositors die, move abroad or discontinue transactions, leaving their legal heirs unaware of the funds. Accounts that have not seen any activity for more than ten years are classified as unclaimed and come under the supervision of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Banks usually try to contact account holders or their heirs through available address records, officials said. But when these efforts fail, awareness camps like this one are conducted under the guidance of RBI and Government of India to help applicants get their rightful funds.
The camp will also provide information on unclaimed deposits and the UDGAM portal.
